Burnout prevented me from doing my usual cardio/aerobic activities so I decided to hire a personal trainer to learn how to weight train properly.  I requested a trainer experienced with sports injury and training middle aged adults.

In our consultation, Jeremy asked me for specific goals.  Being skeptical, I figured that I would aim high so I said that my goals were to learn how to weight train, to gain weight and to have a toned appearance.

Initially we worked out three times per week and tapered down the sessions to twice per week.  We looked at my diet.  I kept a food diary and Jeremy advised me on how to improve my eating habits.  After a few months, I noticed changes!  Other people noticed too which really surprised, motivated and pleased me.

In terms of measurable changes, these include: 

  • Improved core strength as evidenced from being able to do exercises requiring various degrees of balance on a stability ball
  • Increased dynamic functional strength so that I can now do wide grip chinups, and am working on a handstand pushup!
  • Learning diaphragm breathing that improved my cardiovascular endurance in aerobic activity such as spinning
  • How to ‘draw in’ the abdominal muscles resulting in stronger abdominals with a flatter appearance

In terms of mental changes, I am more aware of the relationship of diet to activity.  The personal challenge is overuse injuries.  I have to modify my activities and understand that rest is equally important.

The golf has been good.  Everyone has been complimenting my easy smooth swing and the ball is going an extra 10 to 15 yards with the driver.  My scores have been in the mid 80's. which is great since I feel that I am still leaving strokes out on the course.  There is always one part of my game that is lacking short game, putting approach shots, but my driving has improved immensely.  I think the problem has been that I have been playing only once a week recently and have lost consistency.  I am sure that once I get back to playing twice a week, my scores will drop.
